BOOK CLUB MEETINGS ARE A GREAT SUCCESS!
This week we began our first book clubs at Seguin. Each grade level (3rd - 6th) met during their lunch to discuss...what else, books! We had a fantastic time discussing Texas Bluebonnet nominations and our favorite books ever. We even discussed ways to get kids more familiar with the many books in the library. The kids blew me away with their enthusiasm! All of the grades did a great job; however, I had to keep asking our fifth graders to be quiet. They were so excited about the different books mentioned that side discussions kept breaking out over the library. It would have been a rule-breaker if it weren't for the fact that ALL of the side discussions were about the books. And, our third and fourth graders were bummed that Monday is a holiday so no book club. I even had a number of students ask why we couldn't meet twice a week! If only we could!!!

New Books and Furniture for the Library
Thanks to all of the students, parents, and staff who visited our book fair back in September, the library will be getting new books and some furniture to go along with them. The items include 2 blue rockers, 1 red rocker, a blue chair and ottoman, a floor theater, and ten book sets (78 books in all) that cover outdoor adventures, rescue dogs, sharks, U.S. military, animals, and more. Thanks again to everyone for their support.

2013-2014 Bluebonnet Nomineess Available for 3rd - 6th Grade
The new Bluebonnet list is out and there are twenty new books to check out. The reason I like the Bluebonnet list is because it exposes readers to different genres and challenges us to branch out into new reading territory. I am providing the link to this school year's nominees. It is http://www.txla.org/TBA-nominees. You can also check out my Shelfari on the right side of the blog. There is a picture of each book on the shelves. There are so many good books to read...this is just a starting place for students at Juan Seguin. Happy reading!

2011-2012 Bluebonnet Nominations
I am posting my personal reviews of the Bluebonnet books to the "Book Reviews" page as I read them. If you want to see how I rated them, scroll down to the Good Reads bookshelf on the Home page. If you move the cursor over the book it will show my rating. Anything with a three or better means I enjoyed reading it. If I rated it a five that means I had a hard time putting it down.
Reading Tip: There were times when reading the chapter books that I had to go a day or two between readings. While this is never a good idea, sometimes it can't be helped. When this happens, I always go back and read the last page or two of the previous chapter just to keep the flow of the book going. Remember, it's not only okay--but smart--to go back and reread when we can't remember something (like what we just read) or when something we read just doesn't make any sense.

It's Hot in Texas
It's July, and it's hot in Texas. Another thing that is hot--the 2011-2012 Texas Bluebonnet Nominations. I have already read six of the twenty nominees so far. And, I have enjoyed every book on the list. Reading has allowed me to visit places I may never get to go in person: I have been across America and to the Florida Keys; I have been across the ocean to South Africa; and, I have even traveled to other worlds. My goal is to have the entire list read by the time school resumes in August. If you can't wait until school starts to read your first 2011-2012 Texas Bluebonnet Nominee stop by the Weatherford Public Library and check out a book or two. Happy Reading!
